Laboratoires Goëmar has filed its laminarin biopesticide with China's ICAMA, marking a new front for seaweed-derived crop protection
17 Jun 2026

Laboratoires Goëmar, a French marine biotechnology company, submitted its laminarin biopesticide, derived from the seaweed Laminaria japonica, to China's Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals, Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA) for regulatory review in April 2026. The filing places a polysaccharide-based crop protection product inside one of agriculture's most closely watched approval systems.
Laminarin's kelp origin distinguishes it from both microbial biologicals and conventional synthetic pesticides. That distinction has commercial relevance: regulators and growers across major agricultural markets are seeking alternative tools to slow chemical resistance and reduce the synthetic load on soils. China's ICAMA process is demanding, and entry into it signals the product has cleared baseline scientific criteria.
Crop protection portfolios in China have long relied on synthetic chemistry. A polysaccharide-based entrant, if approved, would mark a genuine shift in the range of tools available to distributors and agronomists serving hundreds of millions of farming households. The commercial opportunity is not trivial.
Goëmar's move also reflects a wider regulatory trend. Agencies across multiple regions are updating frameworks to accommodate plant- and marine-derived biochemicals, and companies that move early through national approval systems typically gain meaningful commercial timing advantages over later entrants with comparable products.
Attention now turns to the pace of ICAMA's evaluation. Competing marine-derived biopesticide candidates, still working through the science-to-market pipeline, will follow each milestone closely. The outcome could shape the template for how seaweed-based actives enter tightly regulated markets across the Asia Pacific region for years ahead.
